Be sure to convert all 4/c graphics to CMYK. Define all color names the same, in both your graphics and page layout programs. Output laser copies to verify accurate color break.
4. "Missing Scans and Image Files" Send all (Tiffs and EPS ) used in your document. For Quark use "Collect for output", for other apps check the links to make sure you include files with the proper names. And don't forget those embedded art files.
Application Specific Notes
Adobe PhotoShop - All 4/c file should be saved as CMYK format. Black & White halftones should be saved as Grayscale, while line art should be saved as Bitmap mode. Be sure images are Hires ( Line screen times 2 ). Bitmap images should be between 600 and 1000 DPI. PhotoShop provides options for saving halftone and transfer functions information in its EPSF file. Also allows you to specify the line screen (lpi), angle, and dot shape. Please DO NOT use any of these options. Also DO NOT save files with LZW compression. Binary EPS files are the preferred format and are about half the size ASCII EPSF. When silhouetting in PhotoShop, keep points to a minimum and do not save the clipping path with a flatness less than 7. When saving or using photo CD's never save or leave files as JPEG They must be converted to tiffs or EPS format to print. DO USE PhotoShop to create blends or gradients. Add a gaussian noise of two, this will help reduce banding.
Quark Xpress - Set picture box background to white or zero percent black whenever possible. Rotate, scale and crop images before placing them on your page. Place all scans at 100 % otherwise you could com-promise quality. Change all color to either process or spot, delete unused colors. Delete unused items rather than cover them.
